The issue of copyright has long been a major challenge in the video industry, hindering its growth and innovation. However, with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, new solutions are emerging to address these longstanding problems. Recently, Alibaba Big Entertainment Group and Alibaba's Dharma Institute announced the launch of a comprehensive digital rights management platform called "Whale Watch." This platform leverages the AI technologies developed by the Bodhidharma iDST (Data Science and Technology Research Institute), enabling intelligent video editing while embedding unique "fingerprints" into audiovisual content for full-network traceability.
This marks the first time that the iDST has collaborated on such an initiative since its establishment. Ren Xiaofeng, chief scientist and vice president of iDST at Alibaba Dharma, shared with the 21st Century Business Herald that the goal set by Jack Ma is ambitious: "We need to solve future challenges, especially in the field of copyright protection."
With the explosive growth of the video industry, piracy and unauthorized content distribution have become more prevalent. According to the 40th Internet Development Statistical Report from China's CNNIC, by June 2017, over 565 million users were watching online videos in China. Meanwhile, platforms like Toutiao process over 21.5 million short videos daily. The surge in content has led to increased issues of infringement, making efficient copyright protection a top priority.
Ren Xiaofeng emphasized the importance of fingerprinting technology in protecting video content. By calculating unique features of each video—like a human fingerprint—each piece of content can be uniquely identified. Previously, infringers would alter videos by adding watermarks, changing resolution, or adjusting brightness. But with this new technology, even after such changes, the original content can still be detected. The system now achieves over 99% accuracy in identifying different scenes.
Behind this breakthrough is the power of artificial intelligence. Whale Watch uses iDST's AI to analyze multiple dimensions of video content, tagging it with over 20,000 labels. Knowledge maps are then used to organize these tags, making video content searchable and recognizable.
In addition to accurate identification, the platform also boasts high processing efficiency. It can handle nearly 300,000 hours of video on a single machine. This is made possible through a "binary" indexing engine, which converts all video changes into two values—zero or one. This simplification greatly enhances storage and computational speed.
Currently, the platform can process video downloads, decoding, and encoding in milliseconds. A 5-minute video can be fully processed within 10 seconds without losing any of its original features.
Ren Xiaofeng, who joined Alibaba as chief scientist in 2023, brings extensive experience from his time at Amazon, where he led computer vision teams. His research focuses on image and video content recognition, aiming to go beyond simple labeling and achieve deeper understanding of video content.
He believes that while there are still gaps between Chinese and U.S. AI technologies, China is rapidly catching up, especially in face and image recognition. Looking ahead, the team aims to develop more advanced video analysis capabilities, such as identifying relationships between characters, scenes, and actions.
For Ren, the future of video technology lies not just in detection but in comprehension. As the field continues to evolve, he remains committed to pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in the world of video.
