In September, the HDMI Forum Inc. unveiled the latest HDMI 2.0b interface standard, while the specifications for HDMI 2.1 were also officially announced. As the most widely used audio and video interface, HDMI continues to dominate the AV market, being applied in TVs, monitors, PCs, and even smartphones.
Portland, Oregon — November 29, 2017 — Lattice Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: LSCC), a leading provider of customized smart interconnect solutions, announced the release of SiI9437 and SiI9438, the first Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) audio receiver and transmitter compliant with the HDMI 2.1 standard. eARC is a forward-looking feature designed to significantly enhance home theater connectivity. This user-friendly new audio function is part of the newly introduced HDMI 2.1 specification. Developed by the HDMI Forum, which includes over 80 major consumer electronics companies, eARC represents a major step forward in audio technology.
As a founding member and active contributor to the HDMI standard, Lattice has maintained its leadership position in the market with the introduction of HDMI 2.1 products that support eARC technology. eARC allows audio equipment to seamlessly connect with TV sets, enabling users to control device selection and volume via the TV remote—without needing extra steps for the audio system. By utilizing two pins of the HDMI interface (the same as the HDMI Ethernet channel), eARC transmits low-jitter, high-bandwidth audio along with two-way communication signals for audio discovery and control. This is a significant improvement over older TOSLINK and SPDIF outputs, which required separate cables and lacked the necessary communication support between devices.
Joanna Skrdlant, general manager of Xperi’s home audio equipment and solutions licensing business, stated, “DTS (now Xperi) is excited to collaborate with Lattice on developing eARC technology, which addresses a long-standing compatibility challenge in home theater systems. We believe the features introduced by eARC will greatly enhance the consumer experience, allowing audio content to be delivered more simply through the connection of TVs and audio devices. This enables an immersive audio experience from ultra-high-definition Blu-ray discs, DTS: X, and DTS-HD surround sound from CDs and streaming services.â€
Marshall Goldberg, marketing manager at Lattice Semiconductor, added, “HDMI has always promised consumers the highest quality digital audio and video, as well as simplified setup. eARC marks a major advancement in home theater interconnection, offering superior audio quality compared to TOSLINK or SPDIF without requiring switching through an AVR. Additionally, the new discovery feature ensures compatibility across different manufacturers’ products within home theater systems.â€

The introduction of eARC makes high-performance audio systems as easy to use as the TV’s built-in speakers. The key features of Lattice's HDMI 2.1 SiI9437 and SiI9438 eARC ICs include:
- Support for both TV and audio equipment
- Compatibility with existing HDMI transmitter or receiver ICs across all HDMI versions
- Support for HDMI 2.1 eARC and HDMI 1.4 traditional ARC mode with automatic fallback
- Support for eARC control channel via I2C interface
- Compact 4mm x 4mm QFN package with 0.4mm lead pitch
- Support for eARC data channels, including lip sync, discovery, heartbeat, status, and function signals
