On November 1st, Alibaba Group revealed that during the Tmall Double 11 shopping festival, the North China Data Center's inspection process will be fully handled by an advanced intelligent operation and maintenance robot named Tianji. This innovative system uses 3D laser radar technology to navigate autonomously within the data center, performing inspections without human intervention. Equipped with a high-resolution panoramic camera and various sensors, Tianji is capable of monitoring critical environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, air quality, electrical parameters, and air conditioning performance in real time.
The robot’s capabilities are powered by a sophisticated intelligence system running on Alibaba Cloud. This includes a range of algorithms, data storage solutions, load balancing technologies, and remote disaster recovery systems. These cloud-based tools allow Tianji to detect and analyze issues across nearly a million servers, enabling quick identification and resolution of problems. As a result, it significantly improves operational efficiency and reduces downtime.
According to Alibaba officials, Tianji is currently the most accurate intelligent operation and maintenance robot in the industry. It operates 24/7, handling routine tasks that previously required human effort. The robot has already replaced about 30% of repetitive work for maintenance staff at the North China Data Center. During the Double 11 period, it was deployed to perform continuous inspections, ensuring smooth operations.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in how Alibaba manages its data centers. As data centers grow in scale, relying solely on manual monitoring becomes inefficient and costly. By integrating robotic solutions, Alibaba aims to enhance accuracy, reduce human error, and improve overall operational efficiency.
Yan Kun, a senior expert from Alibaba's data center team, mentioned that future upgrades to Tianji will focus on improving both its algorithm and hardware. After these enhancements, the robot is expected to take over more than 60% of the repetitive tasks currently performed by on-site maintenance personnel. This development underscores Alibaba's commitment to leveraging automation and AI to drive innovation in data center management.
