How far is COB showing the spring of the Red Sea Micro LED breaking through the homogenization market?

On February 6, Lehman Shares revealed in an institutional survey that the company’s COB (Chip-on-Board) display has already been commissioned in January and is set to enter mass production in March, with continued expansion each quarter. This marks a significant step forward in their product development strategy. COB technology, which integrates LED chips directly onto the substrate, has long been favored within the industry. Many experts consider it a key stepping stone toward the future of Micro LED technology, as it offers better performance and reliability compared to traditional SMD methods. Currently, the market for COB small-pitch LED displays is broad, covering areas such as broadcast studios, command centers, surveillance systems, conference rooms, and even cinema applications. The demand for high-resolution, durable, and compact display solutions continues to grow, making COB an attractive option. Li Mantie, Chairman of Lehman Co., expressed optimism about the future of COB displays. He noted that while the overall LED small-pitch display market is expanding, Micro LEDs are still far from commercial viability. “For now, COB remains the best choice,” he said. “It offers a balance between performance, cost, and scalability.” The miniaturization of LED chips is expected to be a long-term process, but it also brings new challenges. Smaller components require more advanced integration techniques, which can be difficult to implement with existing SMD (Surface Mount Device) processes. As a result, there is growing interest in alternative packaging technologies like COB. “Packaging technologies such as COB are gaining attention because they allow for differentiated strategies and higher profit margins,” Li explained. “In a highly competitive market, COB represents a necessary move toward innovation and differentiation.” While many companies are investing in Micro LED, others are focusing on COB as a more immediate solution. For example, Sanan Optoelectronics recently signed a prepayment agreement with Samsung Electronics, under which Samsung will pay $16.83 million in advance for LED chips produced by Xiamen Sanan. This partnership signals a strong commitment to developing Micro LED technology. Samsung and Xiamen Sanan are also exploring deeper strategic cooperation in the Micro LED space. Once Xiamen Sanan achieves full-scale production, Samsung may designate it as a primary supplier. This collaboration aims to secure a stable supply chain for Samsung and position Xiamen Sanan as a leader in the emerging Micro LED market. At CES 2018, Samsung unveiled its 146-inch "The Wall" TV, the first consumer product using Micro LED technology. It showcased superior image quality, contrast, and a modular design that allows for seamless scaling. Other major players, including Sony, Apple, Foxconn, Google, BOE, and Innolux, have also made moves in the Micro LED space since 2017. Despite the excitement, Micro LED still faces significant challenges. High production costs, low yields, and difficulties in achieving mass production remain major hurdles. Additionally, the technology struggles with flexibility, limiting its use in curved or wearable devices. However, the long-term potential of Micro LED remains promising. In a 2017 semi-annual report, Sanan Optoelectronics suggested that once the industrial chain becomes fully established, the market could see exponential growth. This has prompted not only Sanan but also other leading chip manufacturers like OSRAM, Cree, Nichia, and Huacan Optoelectronics to invest heavily in Micro LED research and development. As the industry continues to evolve, both COB and Micro LED technologies are playing critical roles in shaping the future of display innovation. While COB provides a current viable solution, Micro LED holds the promise of a next-generation display revolution.
