In 2020, many countries had planned to roll out commercial 5G services. According to reports, ZTE has made significant progress in its global strategy, breaking into the high-end market and leading in 5G commercialization. The company invested 3 billion yuan to maintain a technological edge in 3G and is now building the most competitive 5G network. As 5G approached commercialization, ZTE adopted a "5G Pioneer Strategy," focusing on end-to-end solutions, and invested heavily in standard development, product innovation, and commercial trials. This effort helped ZTE achieve leadership in three key areas: 5G technology, commercial deployment, and economies of scale.
ZTE has consistently invested 3 billion yuan annually, forming a team of over 4,500 technical experts dedicated to 5G research and development. This commitment has allowed ZTE to lead the way into the 5G era. One of ZTE’s major breakthroughs was being the first to propose Massive MIMO as a key technology for improving spectrum efficiency, capacity, and coverage in 5G networks. ZTE applied this technology to 4G networks first, accelerating the timeline for large-scale 5G commercial deployment. This advancement improved spectrum efficiency by up to eight times, offering immediate benefits to both operators and users while speeding up industrial adoption.
To meet the demand for massive connectivity in 5G networks, ZTE proposed the MUSA solution for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), enabling 3–6 times more user access per time-frequency resource. This significantly reduced terminal power consumption. In China's second phase of 5G testing, MUSA achieved 90 million connections per MHz per hour, far exceeding ITU targets. As the primary drafter of MUSA, ZTE led the 3GPP RAN1 project and played a central role in shaping industry standards.
ZTE also excels in chip design, developing high-performance baseband chips that enable the most integrated NG BBU and the lightest, smallest 5G AAU. These innovations have driven ZTE’s 5G base stations to perform exceptionally well in early and second-phase Chinese 5G tests, including high-frequency field trials at 26GHz. Today, ZTE offers a full range of 5G products and has completed equipment entry and end-to-end service commissioning for Phase III testing in China.
ZTE's 5G innovations have attracted top-tier operators globally. It launched China's first 5G pre-commercial base station with China Mobile, conducted the first 5G field test with Japan’s SoftBank, and built the first pre-commercial network in Europe. By 2017, ZTE’s 5G collaboration map extended to over 20 top carriers worldwide. Operators like Telefonica, Orange, China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom have all partnered with ZTE for 5G testing and strategic cooperation, validating ZTE’s end-to-end solutions and achieving impressive performance metrics such as 2Gbps peak rates.
In November 2017, ZTE, Qualcomm, and China Mobile completed the world’s first end-to-end system test based on the 3GPP R15 standard, unlocking new possibilities for the 5G ecosystem. Today, ZTE provides a comprehensive suite of 5G products, including access devices, bearer solutions, and core networks, preparing operators for large-scale 5G commercial deployment in 2019.
With governments and operators planning 5G commercialization by 2020, China aims to build the world’s largest 5G network by that year. The economic benefits from China’s large-scale 5G rollout will accelerate ZTE’s product maturity and enhance its scale advantage, offering the most competitive 5G commercial network globally. ZTE’s strong TDD expertise, flexible deployment options, and proven track record in network operations position it well for 5G commercial success.
ZTE’s 5G solutions are praised for their flexibility and cost-effectiveness, with Ovum recognizing it as one of only two vendors worldwide capable of providing a complete 5G end-to-end solution. This comprehensive approach ensures deep understanding of 5G network needs. In 2018, ZTE continued to leverage its strengths in 5G technology, commercialization, and economies of scale to drive global 5G adoption and maintain its leadership in the next-generation wireless era.
