Shen Xiangyang deeply involved! Microsoft wants to take the lead in developing artificial intelligence regulations

Microsoft has long been at the forefront of artificial intelligence research, having invested in this field for over 25 years. In a recent publication titled "The Future Computed," the tech giant outlines its vision for the future of AI and automation, emphasizing the need for updated laws and ethical frameworks as more companies enter the AI space.

According to Microsoft, AI developers have a responsibility to ensure their systems do not cause harm. For example, if an autonomous vehicle is programmed with unsafe logic, it could lead to serious accidents or even fatalities. The company argues that as AI becomes more integrated into daily life, so too must the legal and ethical standards governing it.

Additionally, as AI and automation reshape the job market—especially in gig economy sectors like ride-sharing and delivery services—Microsoft believes tech companies should advocate for worker protections. Rather than simply relying on platforms to handle these issues, they argue that businesses must take an active role in ensuring fair treatment and benefits for all workers, regardless of their employment status.

The book "The Future Computed" will be a central topic at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Microsoft aims to position itself as a leader in shaping the future of AI and automation, while also addressing potential challenges such as job displacement and algorithmic bias.

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s President and Chief Legal Officer, emphasized the importance of transparency when discussing these complex issues. He will be speaking at Davos and co-authored the book's introduction, highlighting the company’s commitment to responsible AI development.

Microsoft is working with other major tech firms through initiatives like the Partnership on AI, which includes companies such as Amazon, Apple, and Facebook. However, legal expert Ryan Calo from the University of Washington noted that it's rare for tech companies to push for stronger regulations in emerging fields like AI. He said, “If you're Microsoft, you want to be seen as a trusted partner.” While Calo wasn’t involved in writing the book, he has consulted with Microsoft on other AI-related matters, and some of his research was funded by the company.

Both Microsoft and Calo agree that while new legislation isn't imminent, the need for updated rules is clear. Over the next two years, under the leadership of Shen Xiangyang and Brad Smith, Microsoft plans to develop comprehensive ethical guidelines for its AI projects. Smith predicts that meaningful legal changes will come within the next few years.

Recently, Microsoft has also been pushing for labor law reforms to better classify gig workers, such as Uber drivers and Postmates couriers. These employees fall between full-time and independent contractor statuses, and Smith believes a new category is needed to ensure they receive proper benefits like healthcare and retirement support.

In the book, Microsoft states: “The tech industry needs to move away from the idea that innovation comes at the expense of workers who are left without protection, benefits, or career opportunities. Companies that fail to recognize the value of employee welfare risk damaging their reputation and may face increased regulatory scrutiny.”

By taking a proactive stance on AI ethics and labor rights, Microsoft is positioning itself not just as a technological leader, but as a responsible actor in shaping the future of work and society.
