The `rm` command in Linux is extremely powerful and irreversible. To prevent accidental deletion, you can create a custom script to replace the `rm` command. Here's how it works.
This simple script avoids using the `rm` command directly and performs the following functions:
1. If the recycle bin doesn't exist, it creates one.
2. It removes the trailing slash (`/`) from folder names if present.
3. It appends a date to the file or folder name. If it's a folder, it packages it first and moves it to the recycle bin, while moving the original folder to `/tmp`.
Save the script as `my_rm.sh` and place it in a hidden directory, such as `/home/fedora/.my_remove`.
Next, modify your startup scripts. For Fedora, edit the `.bashrc` files in both your home directory and the `/root` directory. Add two lines to include this script in your environment and create an alias for `rm`, as shown in the image below.
After making these changes, restart your system (you can use the `reboot` command) for the updates to take effect.
Once everything is set up, you can check the alias by running the `alias` command. The result should look like the image below.
Now, when you use the `rm` command to delete files or folders, it won’t permanently remove them. Instead, they will be moved to the recycle bin with a timestamp added to their names, making it easier to identify them later.
If you want to empty the recycle bin, navigate to it and run the following command. This will allow Linux to automatically clean up the `/tmp` directory after some time.
This approach adds a safety layer to file deletion, reducing the risk of accidental data loss.
