On November 1st, Alibaba Group revealed that during the Tmall Double 11 shopping festival, the North China Data Center’s inspection process will be fully managed by an intelligent operation and maintenance robot called Tianji. This advanced robot utilizes 3D laser radar technology, enabling it to navigate autonomously within the data center and carry out inspections independently. Equipped with a high-precision panoramic camera and various sensors, Tianji can monitor key environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, air quality, electrical parameters, and air conditioning conditions in real time.

The ability of these robots to handle complex tasks is powered by advanced AI systems running on Alibaba Cloud. These systems include a range of algorithms and applications designed for efficient data storage, online analysis, load balancing across the network, and remote disaster recovery. With cloud computing support, Tianji can detect failures and environmental anomalies across nearly a million servers, allowing for rapid troubleshooting and accurate decision-making.
According to Alibaba officials, Tianji is currently the most accurate intelligent operation and maintenance robot in the Internet data center industry. It operates 24/7, reducing the workload of human staff by up to 30% through automation of repetitive tasks. During the recent Double 11 event, the robot was deployed to inspect the North China Data Center, demonstrating its reliability and efficiency.
Tianji represents a bold new approach by Alibaba to manage and maintain its growing data centers. As data centers expand in scale, relying solely on manual monitoring becomes both costly and inefficient, increasing the risk of oversight. Introducing robots like Tianji helps alleviate this burden, allowing human workers to focus on more strategic and complex tasks.
Yan Kun, a senior expert at Alibaba's data center, mentioned that future upgrades to Tianji will focus on improving both its algorithm and hardware. After the enhancements, the robot will be capable of replacing over 60% of the repetitive tasks performed by on-site operation and maintenance personnel, further boosting efficiency and reducing operational costs.
This development marks a significant step forward in the integration of AI and robotics into large-scale IT infrastructure management, setting a new standard for smart operations in the digital age.
