Philips Lighting and China Telecom Beijing Corporation reached a strategic cooperation to accelerate the construction of smart cities

Both parties will leverage smart connected lighting systems and China Telecom's Tianyi cloud technology, along with the next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, to better support the development of smart cities.

The Philips CityTouch Flex intelligent connected street lighting system is the first to integrate with China Telecom's Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) network. It has been deployed in several key locations in Beijing, including Zhongguancun Zhizao Street, Tsinghua University, Fanggu Road, and Xingfu Street. This marks a significant step forward in the city’s smart infrastructure initiatives.

Philips Lighting, a global leader in lighting solutions, recently announced a strategic partnership with China Telecom Beijing. The collaboration aims to combine Philips' expertise in smart connected lighting with China Telecom's advanced IoT and Tianyi cloud services to accelerate the development of smart cities across China. This partnership highlights the growing importance of integrating lighting systems with broader smart city ecosystems.

"Philips Lighting and China Telecom will continue to explore new forms of cooperation and business models in smart cities," said Wang Wei, Global Senior Vice President and President of Greater China at Philips Lighting. "We aim to help more China Telecom partners access the smart city backbone network through lighting systems. This collaboration sets a benchmark for urban smart development and will drive the growth and application of smart city infrastructure in China."

As cities expand, population density increases, bringing challenges in energy consumption and infrastructure management. In response, the National “13th Five-Year Plan” encourages the construction of model smart cities, aiming to develop 100 new smart cities nationwide. Smart connected lighting plays a vital role in this effort, offering a large number of IoT access points. In 2017, Philips introduced its CityTouch Flex system to China, supporting applications such as emergency systems, traffic management, security monitoring, and environmental sensing, making it a crucial component of smart city operations.

Zhang Zhiyong, General Manager of China Telecom Beijing Corporation, emphasized that "the collaboration between China Telecom and Philips represents the implementation of national supply-side reforms. It reflects the commitment of central enterprises to drive innovation and create win-win outcomes. Through coordinated efforts in IoT technology, China Telecom and Philips will work together to promote smart city development and bring their experience and technology to a global stage via the Tianyi IoT Open Platform."

Smart connected lighting relies heavily on carrier networks, and China Telecom is dedicated to becoming a leading integrated information service provider. In June 2017, it launched the world's first full-coverage NB-IoT commercial network. In Beijing, the company redeveloped its 800M LTE network to create a dedicated IoT network. The Philips CityTouch Flex system was piloted in multiple areas, with over 100 LED smart streetlights connected to the NB-IoT network. This initiative supports the broader vision of an interconnected "Smart Beijing."

In addition to the strategic cooperation, Philips Lighting and China Telecom Beijing also joined the Tianyi IoT Industry Alliance. Together, they aim to advance smart city technology by combining their strengths in lighting and communication, providing innovative smart connected lighting solutions for urban environments.

Laser Aspheric Lens

The aspheric lens uses a single element design, which helps reduce the number of lenses in the optical assembly. Unlike spherical lenses, aspheric lenses have a more complex surface, and the curvature of the surface gradually changes from the center of the lens to the edge of the lens. The most significant advantage is that it can correct the spherical aberration caused by the Spherical Lens in the collimation and focusing system. One of the applications of aspheric lenses includes focusing the output from a laser diode, which not only reduces the overall cost, but also outperforms components designed using traditional spherical optical lenses.

The asphere's more complex surface profile can reduce or eliminate spherical aberration and also reduce other optical aberrations such as astigmatism, compared to a simple lens. A single aspheric lens can often replace a much more complex multi-lens system. The resulting device is smaller and lighter, and sometimes cheaper than the multi-lens design.Aspheric elements are used in the design of multi-element wide-angle and fast normal lenses to reduce aberrations. Small molded aspheres are often used for collimating diode lasers.
