Philips Lighting, a global leader in lighting solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with China Telecom Beijing. The collaboration will leverage Philips' smart connected lighting systems and China Telecom’s next-generation IoT (Narrowband IoT, NB-IoT) technology along with Tianyi Cloud services to support the development of smart cities across China.
The Philips CityTouch Flex intelligent road lighting system is the first to integrate with China Telecom’s NB-IoT network, and it has already been deployed in several key locations in Beijing, including Zhongguancun Zhizao Street, Tsinghua University, Fanggu Road, and Xingfu Street. This innovative system connects to various smart city applications such as emergency response, traffic management, security monitoring, and environmental sensing, offering a comprehensive platform for urban operations.
Wang Wei, Global Senior Vice President and President of Greater China at Philips Lighting, emphasized that this partnership sets a benchmark for smart city development. “We are committed to exploring new cooperation models and business strategies that will help more China Telecom partners connect to the smart city backbone network through lighting infrastructure,†he said. “This collaboration serves as a model for future smart city projects and aims to drive the adoption of smart infrastructure across China.â€
Zhang Zhiyong, General Manager of China Telecom Beijing Corporation, highlighted the significance of the partnership. “As two industry leaders in communication and lighting, our cooperation reflects the implementation of national policies on supply-side reform. It also demonstrates our shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and creating value for customers,†he added. He further noted that the collaboration will focus on leveraging China Telecom’s information service capabilities and customer channels to enhance the performance of smart city solutions.
China Telecom has been actively expanding its IoT network, having launched the world’s first full-coverage NB-IoT commercial network in 2017. In Beijing, the company has optimized its 800M LTE network to create a dedicated IoT network, enabling the deployment of over 100 Philips LED street lamps connected to the NB-IoT network. These installations have played a vital role in advancing the concept of an "Internet of Everything" and supporting the vision of a smarter Beijing.
In addition to the partnership, both companies have joined the Tianyi IoT Industry Alliance, aiming to combine their expertise in lighting and communication to accelerate the development of smart city technologies and deliver advanced connected lighting solutions.
Philips Lighting, listed on the Amsterdam Euronext exchange under the ticker LIGHT, is a leading provider of lighting products, from light sources to integrated solutions. With a global presence and a strong focus on innovation, the company continues to lead in energy-efficient LED technology and smart connected lighting systems.
