Freescale Huang Yaojun: Home portable medical equipment has a bright future

Family medical centers are gaining market attention

In China, the household penetration rate of portable medical devices such as blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters, and oximeters is very low. The proportion of people with diabetes in China is very high (accounting for 1/10 of the total population), but among these patients with diabetes, the penetration rate of glucose meters in cities is less than 10%, and less than 3% in suburbs. Therefore, compared with developed countries, this market has great potential. However, foreign brands currently dominate the market. These foreign brands include Omron, Johnson & Johnson, Roche and Abbott. But domestic brands account for only a small part. We believe that in the home medical market, the local medical industry needs to build brand awareness and build consumer confidence, not just rely on low prices.

In addition to these traditional portable medical devices, we find that home medical centers are gaining market attention. As a medical hub, the center can be connected to various medical devices, collect, record and analyze data, and provide health alerts or alarms in due course. In the future, this center will be connected to the hospital, and doctors will provide in-depth professional advice online. According to this trend, we also see that traditional portable medical devices are increasing wired connections (USB) and wireless connections (BTLE, ZIGBEE).

Freescale launched its first ARM Cortex-M0 + processor-based KineTIs L series earlier this year to reduce power consumption. It is suitable for meeting portable medical needs. KineTIs L series provides a USB interface for wired connection. For wireless connectivity, Freescale offers the ZigBee product family and plans to launch BTLE. The challenge is that providers need to provide software drivers and hardware protocol stacks that meet medical standards. For wireless connections, a proven high-sensitivity PCBA is required.

By adding connection interfaces, portable medical devices can be transformed into mobile terminals. For example, by adding an MFi interface to the front of the blood glucose meter, the blood glucose meter can be displayed, stored, and analyzed using iOS devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad) with its own applications. This has been achieved in the Americas. This can also be an Android device. At Freescale, we also provide MFi interface solutions.

We see a large number of OEM / ODMs flooding the market, but most of them do not have their own brands. Brand building is crucial, and manufacturers need time to win customers' trust and investment. Freescale can help customers provide the most competitive products and solutions.
