Huawei Yuquan: 2016 is the key year for NB-IoT industry development

At MWC2016, IoT (Internet of Things) once again became the highlight of the show, and many of its operators and equipment demonstrated its latest innovations and application cases. Among them, NB-IoT (narrowband cellular Internet of Things) is the key for operators to enter the IoT market.

"As a key cellular network technology defined by 3GPP standardization for low-power WAN, NB-IoT has entered a critical year of development." During the MWC, Yu Quan, chief strategy officer of Huawei's wireless network product line, told the "Communication World" reporter .

It is reported that NB-IoT has its advantages of low power consumption, wide coverage, low cost and large capacity, which makes it widely applicable to a variety of vertical industries, such as remote meter reading, asset tracking, intelligent parking, and smart agriculture. The first version of the 3GPP standard is expected to be released in June this year, when a number of test networks and small-scale commercial networks will emerge.

At present, many operators including China's operators are carrying out NB-IoT and research. Regarding the development status of NB-IoT, Yu Quan elaborated on three wonderful viewpoints: First, NB-IoT is an important opportunity for the cellular industry to respond to the Internet of Everything. Second, NB-IoT must establish an open industry platform to succeed. Third, 2016 is a very crucial year for the NB-IoT industry, and standards, chips, networks and commercial applications will mature.

The cellular industry has an important opportunity to respond to the Internet of Everything

If calculated according to the number of mobile SIM cards, the global mobile user penetration rate has exceeded 100%. This makes the entire cellular industry relatively weak in terms of “human connectivity” growth, and needs to find new business growth points, while the Internet of Things market has huge room for growth.

In addition to the driving force of the cellular industry's own change, the traditional industry itself has the networking requirements of things and things, because it can improve the production efficiency of the industry. Based on these massive networking demands in the future, countries have launched development plans, such as Germany's "Industry 4.0" and China's "Made in China 2025".

"In the face of the huge Internet of Things market, Huawei recommends using the cellular network for IoT connectivity, or as the primary choice for IoT connectivity," Yu Quan said.

For the reason of recommendation, Yu Quan said that on the one hand, in terms of business, as of now, the cellular network has covered 90% of the world's population, covering more than 50% of the geographical location. Based on the existing cellular network, operators can provide a very competitive IoT technology, namely NB-IoT.

On the other hand, in terms of technology, NB-IoT technology has four major advantages: First, coverage, NBIoT coverage is 20 DB better than traditional GSM network. According to the coverage area calculation, one base station can provide 10 times area coverage; the second is to support massive connection, below 200KHz frequency, one base station can provide 100,000 connections by NBIoT; the third is low power consumption, NBIoT communication module battery can Ten years of independent work, without the need for charging; Fourth, low cost, the target of the NB-IoT module is less than 5 dollars.

For the above reasons, NB-IoT has shown great market opportunities and is rapidly developing. According to the GSMA prediction, the emergence of NB-IoT will promote the development of the cellular Internet of Things industry, which will reach 3 billion connections in 2020. By 2020, the total value of IoT's industrial chain is expected to reach 3 trillion euros, including upstream and downstream of the entire industry chain, such as network connectivity, data processing, platform applications, and business cooperation.

Compared with WiFi, Bluetooth and other technologies that implement IoT connectivity, NB-IoT also has many advantages such as security and spectrum anti-jamming. An industry insider said that in the deployment of IoT-related applications, products based on unlicensed spectrum appeared to be problematic in just a few days due to interference problems. This is enough to see the importance of the licensed spectrum.

NB-IoT is an open platform

"The NB-IoT industrial ecosystem is growing rapidly. It requires operators to cooperate with IoT-related industry participants and work together." Talking about the challenges of NB-IoT landing, Yu Quan introduced.

Just one day before MWC2016, the GSMA joint venture parties held the world's first NB-IoT summit and established the NB-IoT forum. The alliance members include many mainstream chain operators such as global mainstream operators, network equipment manufacturers and major chip module manufacturers.

Yu Quan emphasized that more than 20 vertical industry companies participated in the summit, which is a very welcome start. "Of course, vertical industry suppliers may not be dozens, but thousands, and there is still a lot of work to be done in the industry." Yu Quan said in the smart meter reading industry that the family currently has water meters, electricity meters, gas meters and heating. There are many tables, such as tables, and there are many companies behind them.

With so many participants, there will be a lot of synergies, and the industry needs an open platform to accelerate the pace of the industry. Moreover, the development of new standards requires an open platform to promote.

In response, many operators have joined the telecom equipment vendors including Huawei to build the Open Lab. It is reported that with Open Lab, vertical industry manufacturers can easily verify their IoT applications, networks and business models on the actual online.

2016 is the key year for the NB-IoT industry

“The NB-IoT standard is expected to be completed in June this year.” Yu Quan said that this reflects the NB-IoT entering a critical year of development.

It is reported that with the 3GPP standard frozen in June, after the baptism of the market, NB-IoT will stand out in the technical competition of the LPWA market and become the best choice for leading operators. At the same time, 2016 will also become the commercial first year of NB-IoT.

This year, many chip manufacturers and module manufacturers will support the development of NB-IoT. On the network side, Huawei plans to launch a system that supports NB-IoT in the second half of this year. Many other network equipment vendors are also planning to support NB-IoT this year.

Operators are very urgent in developing NB-IoT. “Even if the industry has tried its best to promote the rapid development of NB-IoT, the operators still believe that the development progress is not fast enough, which has put a lot of pressure on the suppliers.” Yu Quan revealed.

The vertical industry has also put forward their technical requirements: the terminal battery life should be more than 10 years, the safety must be fully met, and it should be commercially available this year.

The user case is a key to the success of NB-IoT or cellular Internet of Things. Now with Open Lab, the industry has discussed how to enable more user stories. At present, user cases such as smart parking, smart water meters, and intelligent tracking have been verified by the laboratory. "It is expected that there will be a commercial network of NB-IoT in the second half of this year, and it will be deployed on a scale next year. This is the expected expectation of our entire industry." Yu Quan said.

For the development of NB-IoT, Yu Quan said that everything is difficult at the beginning, but the development of the cellular industry for decades, with the tradition of open cooperation, can achieve today's achievements. "I believe that the NB-IoT industry will repeat such open cooperation, bringing new business success to operators and vertical customers, and at the same time promoting the entire society and the entire economy." Yu Quan introduced.

Help operators open the tens of billions of connected markets

It is reported that only 10% of IoT applications are currently based on cellular networks. Cellular networks have coverage advantages and cost advantages. Huawei is ready to complete commercial use in 2016. Huawei said that Huawei's most important step in the IoT market is to "help operators to open a tens of billions of connected markets."

At the same time, under the advocacy of the GSMA NB-IoT Forum, Huawei and operators jointly set up development laboratories to strengthen cooperation between enterprises. At present, Huawei has established six NB-IoT open labs with China Mobile, Emirates Telecom, LG Uplus, Shanghai Unicom, Telecom Italia and Vodafone, focusing on NB-IoT joint innovation, industry development, integration verification, and exploring new The commercial case and business model will be the result of the entire industry.

It is understood that Huawei and mobile operator Vodafone will jointly establish the NB-IoT open laboratory to promote the development and promotion of NB-IoT technology. The NB-IoT Open Lab, which uses pre-standard NB-IoT technology, will investigate network solution validation, new application innovation, device integration, business model research, and product qualification verification.
