Apple MacOS High Sierra Releases Support for VR
For years, high-end virtual reality (VR) experiences like those offered by HTC Vive or Oculus Rift have required a Windows PC. However, that might soon change as Apple has announced free support for VR on macOS High Sierra. This move signals a major shift in how Mac users can access immersive content. The latest macOS update introduces new features specifically designed to enhance the VR experience. Whether you're watching 360-degree videos or playing VR games, these improvements aim to make the process smoother and more engaging for Mac users. Several VR companies are working closely with Apple to ensure better compatibility and accessibility of VR content on macOS. Additionally, Apple is supporting content creators by enabling them to develop immersive games and 360-degree experiences directly on their systems. Valve is also making moves toward macOS, optimizing SteamVR for High Sierra. Meanwhile, Unity and Epic Games are planning to bring their development tools to the platform. Apple’s own video editing software, Final Cut Pro X, will also add 360-degree video support later this year. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, highlighted the significance of macOS High Sierra, saying, “This update makes the Mac faster and paves the way for future innovations. It includes new VR technologies for efficient video streaming, advances in storage, and improvements across apps like Photos, Safari, Mail, and Notes—making the experience more enjoyable for everyone.†macOS High Sierra is available for free through the Mac App Store and supports all Macs released from 2009 onwards. Alongside the OS update, Apple also updated iBook Author, introducing enhanced photo and video processing features, along with support for wide color gamut images. The iMovie app received an update too, adding support for Apple's HEVC format and improved YouTube sharing capabilities. This update not only brings exciting new features but also shows Apple’s growing commitment to the VR and content creation space, making it easier than ever for Mac users to dive into immersive experiences.
