September 27th News: Alibaba Group officially announced today a major update to its operating system strategy, introducing a new brand called AliOS. The new platform's slogan is "Drive everything smart," signaling the company's ambitious move into the rapidly growing Internet of Things (IoT) market.
According to Alibaba's official statement, the newly established Alibaba Operating System Division will significantly increase its investment in IoT technology. This includes developing specialized operating systems for automotive applications, IoT terminals, chips, and industrial use. Additionally, it will integrate the previously launched YunOS mobile services, creating a more unified ecosystem across different devices.
Recent research reports indicate that the number of IoT devices worldwide reached 8.4 billion in 2017, marking a 31% increase from 6.4 billion in 2016. For the first time, the number of IoT devices surpassed the global population. Of these, 5.2 billion were consumer-focused, making up 63% of the total. Among them, cars emerged as one of the most commonly used IoT devices, surpassing smart TVs and digital set-top boxes in popularity.
Alibaba has been investing in core operating systems since 2010 and entered the automotive OS market in 2014. In July 2016, SAIC and Alibaba launched the world’s first mass-produced internet-connected car. Over the past year, SAIC has introduced several internet vehicles equipped with Alibaba’s operating system, including models like the Roewe RX5, eRX5, ERX5, e950, i6, ei6, MG ZS, MG3, MG6, and Chase D90.
