When it comes to mobile phone connections, a single operator might typically report numbers in the "hundreds of millions." However, as enterprises transition toward IoT, the number of user connections will need to scale dramatically. This shift demands more robust and scalable solutions.
In the past, Qualcomm segmented its product lines based on different use cases. For example, their flagship mobile platform was divided into series such as 200, 400, 600, and 800. In the IoT space, the company plans to apply this same approach by developing chips tailored for specific market needs, ensuring optimal performance across various applications.
Looking ahead, Qualcomm will place greater emphasis on cellular technology, aiming to enhance its ability to support large-scale IoT connectivity. The company is set to launch new products categorized into two main groups: one supporting LTE Cat-1 and above for broader IoT applications, and the
other targeting LTE Cat-M1 and LTE Cat-NB1 for low-power, wide-area networks. This segmentation allows for intelligent integration, enabling devices to communicate seamlessly and form a unified network.
Moreover, Qualcomm recognizes the strengths and limitations of these two product categories and intends to combine them, enabling full-mode IoT applications on a single hardware platform. This approach gives customers global flexibility, allowing them to operate across different network infrastructures while improving efficiency and reducing costs.
