[Global Technology Correspondent Wang Huan] According to a report by "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" on August 2, Haier Group has begun reaching out to Japanese companies to seek out advanced technologies needed for their product development. This initiative was facilitated by Haier's Shanghai office working closely with the Yokohama Corporate Management Support Group (IDEC), and relevant information was subsequently published on IDEC's official website. This move by Haier represents a significant step toward fostering open innovation within international collaborations.
One of the specific requests from Haier involves designing a temperature control mechanism for electric water heaters, ensuring consistent water temperature during use. They also expressed interest in finding solutions for achieving softer water in showers, aiming for a cost-effective solution priced under 300 yuan. Haier’s initial request list includes six such technical needs, all currently focused on water heater-related product lines. However, IDEC anticipates that Haier may soon extend this outreach to cover additional business segments, potentially involving five to six more divisions in the near future.
This strategic effort stems from Haier’s acquisition of Sanyo Electric’s white goods division in 2012, which was based in Osaka. This acquisition has strengthened Haier’s ties with Osaka, playing a key role in driving this new initiative. Japanese companies keen on collaborating with Haier can reach out via the prefecture’s office in Osaka. Additionally, Haier plans to host a conference at its headquarters in Qingdao to further explore these opportunities.
