Google plans to set up a mobile phone module store for users to DIY personalized smartphones

Inspired by the Google Play app store on October 23, Google will set up a similar hardware store under the name of the Ara smartphone project. Users can purchase and sell hardware modules like Lego blocks to customize their own smartphones.

The Google Ara project is designed to allow users to assemble their own smartphones. The $50 assembled phone has a basic phone border, and users can freely choose and replace or even remove any components, including screens, cameras, antennas, CPUs, batteries, etc., so users can easily replace a fault. Or outdated parts, no need to buy a new smartphone, thus reducing e-waste and extending the life cycle of the phone.

Google is pursuing a module with physiological indicators, and independent hardware developers can build modules such as antennas and medical sensors. These modules need to be designed according to the Google Module Development Kit (MDK), which provides detailed design parameters and guidelines.

Google plans to set up a module hardware store

“Anyone can create a module based on the standards proposed by the development kit and then launch it into the Ara module market, similar to the Google Play app store, and then sell it directly to consumers.” Ara from Google ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects) Project leader Paul Eremenko said in a recent speech at Purdue University. Consumers can also view the most popular modules based on ratings and user ratings, similar to popular app rankings in the Google Play app store, he said.

Google will launch a pilot of the Ara hardware market in 2015, during which time efforts will be made to identify problems that arise during use. Google has developed three prototypes of Ara smartphones with different screen sizes, but Eremenco said it is still a while away from global shipments.

"We still have a long way to go to eliminate the technical risks of the project. We may also develop two prototypes. In the hardware market testing process, we must be familiar with how people interact with this device." Ke said.

Module phones are not a new concept. In 2010, the Israeli company Modu announced a Brewphone phone with a keyboard, speakers and camera that can be installed. ZTE is also developing a custom smartphone, Eco-Mobius, but it is not yet available.

The prospects for the Google Ara project have been questioned by outsiders, but Eremontco believes that consumers will like this flexibility. "If we can expand the price range, not only can we do ordinary functional phones, but also assemble exciting ultra-high-end mobile phones with functions such as medical diagnosis, then we may bring the next 5 billion smart to the mobile Internet. Mobile phone users," Eremenko said.

The success of the Google Ara project ultimately depends on the functionality, which is determined by various modules. Eremenko hopes that the module development process will be as simple as possible, and his team is developing new design tools, hoping to make the hardware design as simple as writing a mobile application. "Now a new smartphone can take 12 months, 18 months, or even 24 months from development to launch, and we hope to shorten this process to a few months." Eremenko said.

Google encourages developers to provide new module ideas, and Google itself is actively conceiving. The company is pursuing an "adaptive business experience" whose philosophy is to track the user's physiological indicators through health sensors, "this includes skin electrical reflexes, sweating levels, pupil dilation, gaze directions, and others that can be used in users and electronics. There are no statically collected indicators in the process of business system interaction. If users are overstressed, or impatient, or bored with this experience, we can present another adjusted experience for the user.” Eremenko Say.

During the speech, Eremenko also introduced the concept of the security module, which contains the user's personal information, which can be installed and extracted at any time according to the user of the smartphone.

In line with the Ara project, Google is also working with Linaro to develop a customizable version of Android, which is currently being developed around plug-in-encryption so that smartphones can discover modules without rebooting. Similar to USB accessories, these modules can be identified based on different factors such as storage capacity, input, network, imaging, and more. Some unrecognized modules, such as high-end cameras, will be placed in separate areas to avoid affecting the use of smartphones.

These modules use electromagnetics and consume no power during startup and shutdown. Data transmission is also not through the connector, but through electrical induction. In order to reduce module development costs, Google ATAP also unites companies such as Flextronics and Quanta, making it easy for developers to turn design ideas into finished hardware at a lower cost.
