Breakthrough in research on optical routers for on-chip optical interconnection network nodes

As the way to improve the performance of microprocessors by increasing the main frequency is limited by the "wall of power consumption", the architecture of multi-core parallel processing has gradually become one of the important means to continue to improve the performance of high-performance microprocessors. For a multi-core processor, its overall performance is not only related to the performance and number of its integrated processing cores, but also greatly limited by the communication efficiency between the processing cores. Existing multi-core processors use an on-chip network constructed of metal wires to implement data exchange between multi-processing cores. The on-chip network based on electrical interconnection needs to occupy multiple layers of metal wiring in the CMOS chip. With the increasing number of integrated processing cores on the chip, the multi-core processor has increasingly higher requirements on the on-chip network communication bandwidth. Due to its high power consumption, low bandwidth and high latency, the on-chip network has gradually become a bottleneck in the development of multi-core processors.

The international semiconductor technology development roadmap clearly states that new technologies that replace electrical interconnected on-chip networks need to be found as soon as possible. Optical interconnect is widely regarded as a very promising alternative because of its low power consumption, high bandwidth and low latency. In 2008, the United States and the European Union launched the projects "Research on high-performance on-chip communication based on nanophotonics" and "Wavelength division multiplexing optical interconnection system on CMOS circuits". Internationally renowned computer companies Intel, IBM, HP and SUN have also set up photonics research departments to start related research projects.

The optical router is the core device of the on-chip optical interconnection network. Its basic function is to implement data routing and exchange between the local node and neighboring nodes in the east, south, west, and north directions. Well-known research institutions such as IBM, Intel, HP, SUN, MIT, Cornell University, Columbia University, IMEC and Ghent University in the United States have all carried out relevant research. The Institute of Optoelectronic Systems of the Institute of Semiconductors of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been engaged in research on optical routers for on-chip optical interconnection network nodes since 2009, and has innovatively proposed comprehensive performance (device loss, channel crosstalk, channel uniformity, and scalability) superior to The topology of peer optical routers. After two years of hard work, the research team took the lead in implementing the five-port optical router for on-chip optical interconnection network nodes in May 2011, with a data throughput of 50Gbit / s (previously only Cornell University in the United States) (The joint group with Columbia University and the research group of the Institute of Semiconductors have successively implemented four-port optical routers).
