Samsung is intensifying its efforts in developing Micro-LED-based television technology, according to a recent report from South Korea. As a leader in this field, Sony introduced its "Crystal LED Display" at the International Consumer Electronics Show back in 2012. Now, Samsung is making a strong push to catch up and stay competitive. In late March of this year, the company launched a dedicated cinema display called the Cinema Screen. While Samsung currently focuses on high-end QD-LED TVs, it's seeking alternative technologies due to limited growth in that segment.
According to reports, Samsung is exploring several options, including the acquisition of PlayNitride, a Taiwan-based company, which was first mentioned by OLED-Info in April 2017. The company’s plan is to first implement Micro-LED technology for cinema LED screens and later expand it to home television applications.
There are still significant technical hurdles before Micro-LEDs can be widely used in consumer TVs and mobile devices. Industry insiders estimate that it may take until 2019 or later before the technology becomes mainstream.
Samsung’s dominance in the high-end TV market has been declining. Its market share dropped from 57% in 2015 to 20% in 2016, as its QD-LED technology struggled to match the performance of LG’s OLED TVs. Meanwhile, LG’s market share rose from 17.5% in 2015 to 43% in 2016, highlighting the growing competition in the premium television segment.
With the increasing demand for more advanced display technologies, Samsung is clearly looking to position itself as a key player in the next generation of television displays. By investing in Micro-LED, the company is not only aiming to regain lost ground but also to lead the future of visual technology.
