Samsung challenges the LED market, layout Micro-LED high-end TV

Samsung is ramping up its efforts in developing Micro-LED-based television technology, according to a recent report from South Korea. As a leader in this field, Sony introduced its "Crystal LED Display" at the International Consumer Electronics Show in 2012. Now, Samsung is not far behind. In late March of this year, the company launched a dedicated cinema display called "Cinema Screen." While Samsung currently focuses on QD-LED high-end TVs, it's seeking alternative technologies due to stagnant market share growth in that segment. According to industry sources, Samsung is exploring multiple alternatives, one of which involves acquiring PlayNitride, a Taiwanese company. This acquisition was first reported by OLED-Info in April 2017. The company's plan is to initially apply Micro-LED technology to cinema LED screens before expanding into home television markets. ![Samsung challenges the LED market, layout Micro-LED high-end TV](http://i.bosscdn.com/blog/24/74/21/5-1G012160920237.png) Despite the potential, there are still significant technical hurdles before Micro-LEDs can make their way into mainstream TV and mobile applications. Industry insiders believe it may take until 2019 or later for the technology to be commercially viable. Samsung's dominance in the high-end TV market has declined sharply in recent years. Its market share fell from 57% in 2015 to 20% in 2016, as its QD-LED TVs struggled to compete with LG’s OLED offerings. Meanwhile, LG’s market share surged from 17.5% in 2015 to 43% in 2016, signaling a major shift in the competitive landscape. With this in mind, Samsung is clearly looking to regain its edge through innovative technologies like Micro-LED.
