On July 26, during Xiaomi Technology's founder's latest product launch event, it was announced that Xiaomi's offline retail store, Mi Home, has opened 149 locations in just over a year and a half, spanning around 40 to 50 cities across China. The company is optimistic about expanding this network significantly, with ambitions to reach 1,000 stores within the next three years.
The image below shows Lei Jun (CEO of Xiaomi) inviting Lu Qi to visit one of Xiaomi's Mi Homes.
Lei Jun expressed his belief that if these 1,000 Mi Homes could achieve an annual turnover of 70 billion yuan, it would mark the emergence of a robust new retail model. He also mentioned that Xiaomi's annual revenue target for this year is set at 100 billion yuan, and achieving this milestone seems highly probable given their current trajectory.
According to Xiaomi’s current financial standing, once Mi Home reaches an annual turnover of 70 billion yuan in three years, it will signify that both online sales through Xiaomi.com and offline retail efforts will be on par in terms of contribution to overall revenue.
Lei Jun acknowledged that over the past one to two years, Xiaomi faced numerous negative press reports, particularly regarding fluctuations in smartphone shipments. Indeed, Xiaomi did experience certain challenges and pressures during this period. However, after diligently addressing these issues over the last couple of years, Xiaomi managed to stabilize its position and bounce back stronger than ever. In fact, Lei Jun proudly stated that no other mobile phone manufacturer globally has been able to recover from such a decline as Xiaomi did.
He emphasized that Xiaomi has charted a unique path since its inception seven years ago. Initially focusing on developing MIUI, Xiaomi ventured into making smartphones due to the success of MIUI. This success then propelled Xiaomi into launching its e-commerce platform, which subsequently led to ventures like TVs, routers, and investments in its ecosystem of connected devices.
When asked about what kind of company Xiaomi truly is, Lei Jun replied that Xiaomi is not easily categorized under one label. It functions as a mobile phone company, a mobile internet company, and now increasingly as a new retail entity. Given its multifaceted nature, summarizing Xiaomi in a single word proves challenging.
As we continue observing Xiaomi's growth trajectory, it's clear they are reshaping the tech landscape not only in China but potentially worldwide.
