Cypress offers developers a new sensing solution for metal-containing materials

The easy-to-use PSoC® 4700 MCU is compliant with the trend toward more metal materials in industrial, automotive and consumer applications.

San Jose, Calif., April 23, 2018 — Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: CY), the leader in embedded solutions, today announced PSoC for inductive sensing technology to detect metal surface product touches ® 4700 Series Microcontrollers (MCUs). Consumer, industrial and automotive products are diversifying their products by using metal materials to increase the attractiveness of their appearance. The new Cypress PSoC® 4700 Series features inductive sensing technology that is as easy to use as Cypress's industry-leading CapSense® capacitive sensing solution, giving developers the freedom to use a variety of metallic materials. The PSoC 4700 Series helps developers solve capacitive and inductive sensing problems and is ideal for modern advanced industrial designs.

The Cypress PSoC CreatorTM Integrated Design Environment (IDE) supports the development of the PSoC 4700 inductive sensing solution, so users can drag and drop off-the-shelf, mass-produced hardware modules that include the latest inductive sensing capabilities. Go to the design and easily configure it with a simple graphical user interface.

John Weil, vice president of Cypress's MCU business unit, said: "Customers want to improve the aesthetics and reliability of their products through high-quality metal user interfaces. Although inductive sensing technology is ideal for these applications, it is numerous due to manufacturing processes. The variable factors are difficult for customers to achieve. The PSoC 4700 MCU family solves this problem with 15 years of experience in CapSense capacitive sensing and SmartSenseTM auto-tuning, providing customers with easy-to-use, adjustable calibration. Inductive sensing solutions."

The PSoC 4700 MCU is based on the 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M0 + core and integrates programmable analog and digital blocks. The device supports up to 16 sensors for digital functions or custom algorithms in a variety of shapes including buttons, linear and rotary encoders, proximity sensing or freeform interfaces. The PSoC 4700 inductive sensing solution delivers exceptional noise immunity for reliable operation even under extreme environmental conditions. This highly integrated solution reduces the cost of BOM materials and enables cost-effective system design.

Cypress's free PSoC Creator IDE simplifies system design by supporting the simultaneous development of hardware and firmware using PSoC components, which are embedded ICs represented by icons in the IDE. Engineers can easily drag and drop components on the PSoC Creator schematic and customize them with the graphical component configuration tool to easily configure programmable analog and digital blocks in PSoC. The tool has an auto-calibration function that automatically compensates for errors caused by various variables during mass production.
