Toshiba launches new series of image recognition processors

21ic News Toshiba Corporation announced that it will expand its ViscontiTM [1] series of image recognition processor lineup with the launch of the ViscontiTM 3 series. The new device in the new series, the TMPV7528XBG, integrates additional processor cores to support a wide range of applications and extends the range of applications from automotive systems to industrial applications. Product samples will be delivered in April.

Toshiba's original ViscontiTM line of image recognition processors was designed to advance the development of camera vision systems for automotive applications. The processor recognizes traffic routes, vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signals, etc. The ViscontiTM 2 and 3 Series devices incorporate an image processing accelerator that detects pedestrians in real time with a high detection rate.

In addition to these features, ViscontiTM3 also reduces customer software development barriers by integrating ARM 32-bit RISC CortexTM-A9 MPCoreTM (dual-core) to support applications connected to image recognition processors.

Toshiba hopes to expand its image recognition processor business from automotive systems to industrial application-specific camera vision systems with ViscontiTM3. The company's FY15 annual sales target is 2 million ViscontiTM image recognition processors.

background

Advances in technology continue to bring driver assistance and safety systems to road vehicles. The next driver will come from the European Union, and the European New Car Safety Assessment Association (Euro NCAP) requires auto companies to introduce automatic braking systems next year. These systems will initially cover other vehicles and will include pedestrians by 2016. Plans like this are expected. Promote the global image recognition processor market to grow 50-100% in the fiscal year 2010-2015, from 75 billion yen to 100 billion yen [2].

Toshiba has played a pioneering role in the field of image recognition processors. The company began commercializing ViscontiTM in 2004 and promoted the improved ViscontiTM2 in 2011. The new ViscontiTM3 has been improved in terms of functionality, performance and software development efficiency.

Main characteristics

1. ARM CortexTM-A9 MPCoreTM

Upward compatible with the ViscontiTM2 series. The integration of ARM CortexTM-A9 MPCoreTM improves connectivity to car navigation systems, smartphones and cloud services, making it easier for customers to use these features during software development.

2. Single/double precision floating point unit (FPU)

The image recognition algorithms and software in the embedded image recognition processor must be able to analyze a large amount of image data in the video source frame by frame in real time, but the power consumption and memory resources used are limited. Some of these algorithms are difficult to implement in the absence of a floating point unit. To this end, ViscontiTM3 integrates a single/double precision floating point unit in each ARM processor core.
