On Tuesday, a White House official revealed that Facebook and Microsoft had successfully repelled multiple cyberattacks attributed to North Korea in the past week. The U.S. government also publicly blamed Pyongyang for the global WannaCry ransomware attack that swept across over 150 countries in May this year. This cyber incident disrupted computer systems in hospitals, banks, and businesses worldwide, causing widespread chaos.
Tom Posett, a cybersecurity advisor at the White House, stated that Facebook managed to block ongoing attacks, while Microsoft worked on patching vulnerabilities exploited during the assault. He noted that this recent attack was distinct from WannaCry, but did not provide further details. Posett urged other companies to strengthen their cybersecurity efforts and collaborate with the government to prevent future threats.
During a press briefing, Bosset reiterated the U.S. government's claim that North Korea was behind the WannaCry attack, which exploited a flaw in the Windows operating system. He emphasized that the U.S. has "solid evidence" linking the regime to the attack but chose not to release it publicly. The incident affected tens of thousands of organizations globally, highlighting the growing threat of state-sponsored cyber warfare.
Facebook confirmed that it had removed several accounts linked to the Lazarus Group, a North Korean hacking collective. The company said it made it harder for the group to conduct further attacks by disrupting their operations. A spokesperson mentioned that the hackers were using fake accounts to infiltrate user networks and warned affected users about potential threats.
Microsoft’s President, Brad Smith, shared in a blog post that his team had uncovered the malicious software used by the Lazarus Group and helped affected users clean up their systems. He noted that these actions were taken after coordination with government agencies. The company is actively working to identify and neutralize threats posed by the group.
Earlier this week, a senior U.S. intelligence official told Reuters that the U.S. had “full confidence†that the Lazarus Group was responsible for the WannaCry attack. The UK and other nations have also pointed fingers at North Korea for the breach. In addition, many security experts and U.S. officials believe the same group was behind the 2014 Sony Pictures hack, which led to the leak of confidential emails and forced several executives to resign.
As cyber threats continue to evolve, the collaboration between private companies and governments becomes more critical than ever in safeguarding digital infrastructure.
