SF6 gas insulated transformer test

In compliance with the requirements of the "pre-regulation," the following tests must be conducted on SF6 gas-insulated transformers: 1) Humidity test of SF6 gas (volume fraction at 20°C); 2) Analysis of SF6 gas composition; 3) Leak detection test for SF6 gas; 4) Measurement of DC resistance in windings; 5) Insulation resistance, absorption ratio, or polarization index test of windings along with bushings; 6) Measurement of tan δ (dielectric loss factor) for windings and casing; 7) Insulation resistance test of the core and clamping structure; 8) AC withstand voltage test. The details of these tests are outlined below: (1) Test 4 – For parts related to oil-immersed transformers, the windings on the cable or GIS side of a closed outlet may not require periodic testing. This is due to the different operational characteristics and accessibility of these components compared to standard windings. (2) Tests 5 and 6 – For oil-immersed transformer sections, the insulation resistance, absorption ratio, and tan δ measurements can be performed at the neutral point. This approach simplifies the testing process while still ensuring accurate results. (3) Test 7 – The same procedure applies to the insulation resistance test of the core and clamping structure as in oil-immersed transformers. This ensures consistency in evaluating the integrity of the magnetic circuit. (4) Test 8 – The AC withstand voltage test follows the same procedure as for oil-immersed transformers. However, for 110kV SF6 gas-insulated transformers, an induced voltage test is typically used instead of a direct AC test, as it better simulates real-world conditions and reduces the risk of damage during testing. These tests are essential to ensure the safe and reliable operation of SF6 gas-insulated transformers. They help identify potential issues such as moisture ingress, gas leaks, insulation degradation, and winding faults. By following the specified procedures, engineers can maintain the performance and longevity of these critical power system components.
