Augmented Reality Development Platform Vuforia 7 to be released to provide broader device support

PTC recently announced that the augmented reality platform Vuforia will soon release the latest version of Vuforia 7. Vuforia 7 will implement two major improvements: The ability to add digital content to more types of objects and environments, and to provide a stronger AR experience on various handheld devices.

Vuforia is the world's most widely used AR development platform. Vuforia supports mainstream mobile phones, tablets, and glasses, and has helped over 475 million AR application installations on the App Store and Google Play. As the core of the platform, Vuforia Engine uses the device's camera and sensor as a "digital eye" inside the application. It can "see" the objects and surfaces where content can be placed, allowing developers to use existing development tools to create AR experiences.

Vuforia 7 will introduce Model Targets, a new feature that adds content to objects that are not recognized by existing computer vision technologies. Unlike existing methods, Model Targets recognize objects based on their shape, while existing methods rely on detailed visual design common to media, product packaging, and many consumer products. With Model Targets, content can be added to objects such as cars, appliances, industrial equipment, and machinery. Model Targets will spawn new AR content that can replace traditional user manuals and technical service instructions.

In order to meet the huge development demand, Vuforia 7 will also launch a new function that can place content on the horizontal surface. Vuforia Ground Plane can place content on the ground or on the floor or on the desktop indoors or outdoors. Vuforia Ground Plane expands the capabilities of the Vuforia Smart Terrain that was first released in 2013 to take full advantage of depth-sensing cameras. Vuforia Ground Plane will support a wide range of devices on the market today, providing developers with the ideal solution to help them create visual applications ranging from online shopping furniture to viewing designs.

Vuforia 7 will also add Vuforia Fusion functionality to provide the best AR experience on a wider range of devices. Vuforia Fusion solves the fragmentation of AR technology, which involves the camera, sensor, chipset, and software framework of ARKit and ARCore. It senses the characteristics of the underlying device and fuses it with Vuforia functionality, allowing developers to rely on a single Vuforia API to optimize the AR experience. In addition to supporting more than 100 Android and iOS devices, Vuforia Fusion will also provide advanced Vuforia functionality for ARCore and ARKiT supported devices.

Google product manager Nathan Martz said: “From the initial launch of Tango to the present, we have been working with Vuforia, and we are very excited to maintain the partnership through the launch of ARCore. Vuforia allows developers to more easily and easily understand the features of Vuforia that they are familiar with. Use ARCore."

Jay Wright, president of PTC Vuforia, said: “If you are a developer, then now is the best time to start developing AR. Now that Vuforia is integrated into Unity, AR development has become easier than ever. Now you can Putting content into a variety of environments is something that was previously unimaginable."

Tony Parisi, global head of VR/AR at Unity Technologies, said: "Augmented reality is a juggling act in the real world - let the story come to you right on your desktop, in your child's room or in the woods. Glad that Unity developers can now By creating a groundbreaking AR experience with Vuforia, we expect the upcoming Unity version to be delivered to Vuforia 7. We look forward to helping creatives push the AR experience to a higher level.”

The upcoming Unity version will provide Vuforia 7 and support ARKit. Vuforia Ground Plane will be incorporated into Unity as a new, free deployment option. The Vuforia Engine software development kit (SDK) for Xcode, Android Studio, and Microsoft Visual Studio is expected to be available later this year. Support for ARCore is expected to be realized early next year. Developers can now download Unity 2017.2 or use it from Vuforia 6.5.
