According to recent reports from international media, scientists at Oregon State University have made a breakthrough by using a "super acid" — far stronger than the acid found in car batteries — to enhance the performance of copper indium disulfide quantum dots. This innovation could lead to more affordable and safer LED lighting solutions. The research, published in the journal *Materials Letters*, introduces a new method involving a super acid treatment that significantly boosts the photoluminescence of non-toxic, heavy-metal-free quantum dots. These dots now perform on par with traditional cadmium selenide-based quantum dots, which are known for their high efficiency but also for their toxicity. Quantum dots have long been used in various optical and electronic applications. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the toxic nature of elements like lead and cadmium. These materials not only make production costly but also raise safety concerns, especially in fields like biomedical imaging where exposure risks are a major issue. Greg Herman, a professor of chemical engineering at Oregon State University, emphasized the importance of this development. He stated, "Quantum dots hold great potential for many products and technologies, but for mass consumer use, improving LED lighting is one of the most critical areas." He also highlighted the application of these nanocrystals in high-quality, light-emitting TVs. Herman added, "The light emission from these super acid-treated quantum dots is significantly improved." While there are still challenges to overcome, the study demonstrates that the treatment enhances both the lifespan and quantum efficiency of the dots. Since these quantum dots are non-toxic, they open up exciting possibilities for use in biomedical applications as well. This advancement marks a key step forward in making quantum dot technology more sustainable, cost-effective, and safe for everyday use.
