HTC high-end VR head Vive Pro released: resolution increase 78% / built-in headphones

At the CES 2018 pre-launch event earlier this year, HTC unveiled its latest upgrade to the Vive VR headset lineup with the release of the HTC Vive Pro. This new model brings significant improvements, especially in display resolution and user comfort, positioning it as a strong competitor to the Oculus Rift and other high-end VR systems. The most notable enhancement of the Vive Pro is its dual OLED display, offering a resolution of 2880 x 1600 (1400 x 1600 per eye), which translates to an impressive 615 ppi. This represents a 78% increase over the original Vive’s 2160 x 1200 (1080 x 1200 per eye) resolution. The higher resolution not only delivers sharper visuals and clearer text but also helps reduce motion sickness and discomfort that users often experience with lower-resolution displays. Another key feature of the Vive Pro is its built-in headphones and a redesigned, more ergonomic headband. The original Vive was known for being heavy and uncomfortable during extended use, but the Pro’s updated design includes a sizing disk and improved weight distribution, making it more comfortable for long sessions. Additionally, the Vive Pro introduces dual microphones and front-facing cameras, which are particularly useful for developers. It is also compatible with both the 1.0 and 2.0 SteamVR tracking systems, allowing up to four base stations for room-scale tracking. The tracking area has been expanded from 4.5 x 4.5 meters to a spacious 10 x 10 meters, giving users more freedom of movement. HTC also upgraded its wireless solution with the Vive Wireless Adapter, which uses Intel’s WiGig technology on the 60GHz band to provide a stable, low-latency connection. This adapter is compatible with both the original Vive and the Vive Pro, and it’s expected to be available in the third quarter of 2018. In terms of software, HTC enhanced the Viveport App Store by introducing a “VR Preview” feature. This allows users to try out content before purchasing, encouraging more engagement and sales. While most Vive owners typically buy apps through SteamVR, Viveport aims to offer a more direct and convenient way to access VR content. Although HTC did not reveal the exact price or release date for the Vive Pro, it mentioned that the Standard Edition (without controllers and base stations) will launch later in 2018 and support SteamVR 2.0. Controllers and base stations will follow shortly after. Given its premium features, the Vive Pro is expected to be significantly more expensive than the original Vive.
