At the CES 2018 pre-launch event earlier this year, HTC unveiled its latest innovation in virtual reality with the release of the HTC Vive Pro. This new headset is a significant upgrade from the original Vive, offering enhanced performance and features tailored for both gamers and professionals.
One of the most notable improvements is the display resolution. The Vive Pro features dual OLED screens with a resolution of 2880 x 1600 (1400 x 1600 per eye), delivering a stunning 615 ppi. This represents a 78% increase over the previous model’s 2160 x 1200 (1080 x 1200 per eye). The higher resolution leads to sharper visuals, clearer text, and a more immersive experience, reducing motion sickness that was often caused by lower-resolution images in earlier VR headsets.
Another major highlight is the built-in headphones and a redesigned, more comfortable headband. The original Vive had issues with weight distribution and adjustability, but the Vive Pro introduces an ergonomic design with a sizing disk, making it more balanced and easier to wear for extended periods.
Additionally, the Vive Pro includes dual microphones and front-facing cameras, which are especially useful for developers. It also supports both the 1.0 and 2.0 SteamVR tracking systems, allowing up to four base stations for room-scale tracking. The tracking area has been expanded from 4.5 x 4.5 meters to 10 x 10 meters, providing more freedom of movement.
HTC also introduced a new wireless adapter called the Vive Wireless Adaptor, which uses Intel’s WiGig technology on the 60GHz band. This allows for low-latency, high-performance wireless connectivity, compatible with both the Vive and Vive Pro. The device is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2018.
To enhance the user experience, HTC improved the Viveport App Store. While many users purchase content through Steam VR, Viveport now offers a "VR Preview" feature, allowing users to try before they buy. This encourages more engagement with VR content and provides a better shopping experience.
Although HTC did not reveal the exact price or release date, they mentioned that the Vive Pro Standard Edition (without controllers and base stations) would launch later in 2018, supporting SteamVR 2.0. Controllers and base stations will follow shortly after. Given its premium positioning, the Vive Pro is expected to be significantly more expensive than the original model.
