Supermarkets share kitchens and pay attention to how food safety is supervised into new issues
In a fresh supermarket located in Nanning, Guangxi, the third floor has taken on a new and unique function: a "shared kitchen." While the first two floors are dedicated to selling vegetables and fruits, the third floor offers a space where customers can cook their own meals. According to the supermarket’s manager, Mr. Jia, the shared kitchen is currently operating through weekly themed events, such as durian pizza or hot pot nights. These activities are promoted through the store’s WeChat group, and participants sign up in advance. The idea is to encourage members to come together and share cooking experiences.
Mr. Jia mentioned that the shared kitchen is not yet open to the general public, but plans are in place to launch it fully by the end of the year. Customers will be able to use the kitchen to prepare meals with friends and family. Although there is a fee involved for using the facilities, no deposit is required. The charges cover the cost of ingredients, seasonings, and cleaning, but are slightly lower than the actual expenses.
The shared kitchen is equipped with stoves, microwaves, pots, and other essential tools. A sign reading “Farmer Sharing Kitchen†is displayed on the wall, giving it a community feel. Many local netizens have shown interest, with some expressing excitement about the concept. Photos from the site show people gathering in the kitchen for meals, while others asked for more details about the location.
While the idea of shared kitchens is gaining popularity, concerns about food safety and regulation remain. Some people worry about who will oversee the operations and ensure hygiene standards. According to the Food and Drug Administration, if customers are only using the supermarket’s facilities to cook their own meals, they don’t need additional permits. However, if the supermarket were to sell prepared food, different rules would apply.
The industrial and commercial department is also reviewing whether the shared kitchen falls within the supermarket’s permitted business scope. So far, the operation seems to be within the existing framework, as the supermarket is primarily selling groceries rather than offering full catering services.
Mr. Jia believes that the shared kitchen is a convenient and innovative way for customers to enjoy cooking together. He emphasized that the kitchen is clean and well-maintained, making it safe for use. As the concept of sharing continues to grow—whether through bikes, umbrellas, or even charging stations—the shared kitchen represents another creative application of the trend. With more people looking for flexible and interactive ways to engage with their communities, this new feature in the supermarket could pave the way for similar initiatives in the future.
