According to Zhang Zhicheng, since 2005, the number of patent applications in the global semiconductor lighting industry has exceeded 10,000, and it has always maintained rapid growth. Japan and the United States have mastered most of the patented technologies. Among them, Japan has an absolute advantage, accounting for 39.8% of the world's total patents; followed by the United States, accounting for 27.6%. Although China's semiconductor lighting industry started relatively late, the industry has made rapid progress. The growth rate of patent applications has been consistently ranked first in the world in the past five years. At present, China’s patent application volume has accounted for 27.2% of the global total. It is almost equal to Japan and the United States and has become one of the most active patented technologies. Domestic related units have mastered a number of intellectual property rights in LED epitaxial materials, chip manufacturing, device packaging, and phosphors, forming a certain technical foundation. The four major industrial bases in the Pearl River Delta region, the Yangtze River Delta region, Handan area and the northern region, and the seven major bases in Dalian, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanchang, Xiamen, Yangzhou, and Shijiazhuang have also taken shape. China's semiconductor lighting industry technology is showing a flourishing trend.

Statistics show that in 2011, the output value of China's LED industry reached 154 billion yuan, an increase of 22% year-on-year, and output increased by 50% year-on-year. It is expected that in 2012, led by lighting products, the industry output value is expected to reach 200 billion yuan, an increase of 30% year-on-year.
