2013 LED market totals up to $13 billion

General Electric Company expects that the LED industry will develop rapidly in the next few years, and current traditional lighting, such as incandescent lamps, will be completely replaced by LED lighting.

Maryrose Sylvester, head of GE Lighting's head office, said in an interview in New York recently that "LEDs entering indoor general lighting have attracted more and more attention. By 2020, LED will open about 70% to 80% of the general lighting market. ."

Siemens's subsidiaries OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Philips and GE's traditional rivals have made similar growth forecasts. With the introduction of new regulations and the drop in LED prices, the attractiveness of LED lighting systems to individual consumers and commercial buyers has greatly increased.

Maryrose Sylvester stated that in order to capture market opportunities, GE Lighting’s spending on LED technology research and development has doubled in the past five years. But he did not give a specific number.

Munich-based Siemens expects the LED market to grow to 13 billion U.S. dollars (approximately 980 million euros) by 2013 and will increase by another 44% by 2016. Based on the September forecast, Philips in Amsterdam estimated in September that by 2015, LED will occupy 45% of the lighting market share.
