In 2009, the total output value of global LEDs was about 7.6 billion US dollars, Japan was the country with the highest output value, and Taiwan was the region with the largest output (Figure 1). The “smile curve†makes the profits generated by patents of large foreign companies far greater than the value of Taiwan’s hard-working LEDs.
