What is the Myriad 2 chip for Dhan Phantom 4?

A few weeks ago, DJI Dajiang announced the launch of the latest drone product Phantom 4. The aircraft uses computer vision for autonomous flight. Since the previous DJI has shown such technology, it is speculated that the hardware of Phantom 4 is either made by itself or by a giant like Intel. Today, however, chipmaker Movidius announced that it is their Myriad 2 chip that drives the Phantom 4.

This is actually not the first time Movidius has cooperated with a big name like Dajiang. As early as 2014, Movidius's first chip, Myriad 1, was applied to Google's first-generation Project Tango tablet. It seems that in so many years of development, this 125-person enterprise has become an important player in several markets, from drones to mobile phones to virtual reality, which require low-cost, low-power computer vision technology.

Movidius CEO Remi El-Ouazzane said with a smile: "The company was established in the second half of 2005, so we have a long period of gestation." In the early days, the company was turning old movies into 3D movies. Business, doing content for the 3D TV market. In 2010, their chips were applied to 3D rendering, but there were many competitors on the market at the time. In 2013, the company began to work with Tango to realize the broad prospects of computer vision applications and began to focus on the development of a new wave of products.

El-Ouazzane said: "Different computing models require a new chip architecture, which is the same as the GPU that was born 20 years ago. 3D graphics require a new approach." Currently, Movidius is focusing on developing CPU and GPU replacement chips. They are called VPUs, a visual processing product that is optimized for computer vision tasks. Movidius designed the chip independently and built it by TSMC.

In addition to the chip itself, Movidius also designed a series of complementary algorithms, as well as the SDK. DJI uses Movidius hardware and software products to make Phantom 4 achieve outstanding computer vision features. The algorithm ensures that the VPU can handle a variety of different tasks: using the data processing depth information of the stereo camera, as well as the close-range, spatial positioning from the sonar sensor, and the advanced optical flow for identifying and following people. El-Ouazzane said: "There are many chip companies that can do similar things, but we are the only company that controls performance, price and energy consumption to an ideal state."

Such technologies are expected to quickly become a core part of virtual reality and real-world augmentation technologies, enabling smartphones and cheaper headsets to achieve the goals of today's more expensive systems. For example, HTC Vive, this device requires quite different head-mounted goggles, and two laser boxes are needed to draw the entire space and track the user's movement. Tango can do this through mobile devices or headphones.

In addition to computer vision, Movidius also wants to bring its own chips to another hot area, artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Movidius announced a partnership with Google to bring deep learning to smartphones, using powerful image recognition calculations locally on the device. This is also an important part of DJI's new push drones. The device can see and understand the world around it, and it can be done without retrieving the cloud, avoiding the problem of delay.

However, the current system applied to the DJI UAV is limited to the skills of the preset program. El-Ouazzane said: "Most of the features in Phantom 4 are relatively simple descriptions and classifications, so that Phantom can do things like object tracking." But he believes that embedded neural networks will soon be able to break through this. Restricted, "Going forward, drones or mobile phones, through the neural network, can begin to learn independently." The drone that can identify and track people is of course very powerful, but obviously can do better in the future.
