Today, Buolamwini is a Rhodes Scholar and Fulbright Researcher, working to promote “algorithmic accountability” and ensure that automated decision-making systems are fair and transparent. She has given over 940,000 views on her TED Talk about coding bias and founded the “Algorithm Justice Alliance,” a project aimed at raising awareness about these issues. In a recent study, Buolamwini tested the performance of Microsoft, IBM, and Face++ face recognition systems. She created a dataset of 1,270 faces, including individuals from countries with high female representation, such as three African nations and three Nordic countries. Using a dermatologist-approved six-point skin classification system, she evaluated the accuracy of each platform in identifying gender. The results showed that Microsoft had a 21% error rate for black-skinned women, while IBM and Face++ had error rates close to 35%. In contrast, all three companies performed nearly perfectly when identifying white men, with error rates below 1%. IBM responded to the findings by stating that it has been continuously improving its face analysis software and is committed to developing “unbiased” and “transparent” systems. It announced that an upcoming software update would significantly improve accuracy for darker-skinned women. Microsoft also confirmed that it is investing resources into addressing bias in its systems. Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Many of these technologies are being integrated into everyday life, from online payments to public surveillance. Without proper regulation and oversight, the risk of discrimination and unfair treatment increases. Buolamwini continues to push for change, working with organizations like IEEE to develop standards for accountability and transparency in face recognition software. She regularly collaborates with scholars, policy makers, and non-profits to address the ethical implications of AI.
