Yesterday morning, a customer came in with a note asking for a 200M resistor. He said he was buying it for someone else who was repairing something. I asked if he was doing the repair himself or if someone else was. He said it was the person who was fixing it who asked for the part. I was curious—where would a TV need such a large resistor? I told him, "Don't let that guy touch it, he doesn't know what he's doing. I'll sell it to you, but it's basically useless." In the afternoon, the customer came back with his son and a big CRT TV. I recognized it as a Changhong HDTV. When I asked what the problem was, he said, "There's a line on the screen." I opened the back cover, pulled out the board, and took a close look. The only issue I saw was a burned R406 resistor. But the problem wasn't there—it was the field block that had failed. I checked the schematic for this model and saw that R406 was supposed to be a 12K resistor. Did that person even know what they were asking for? Before proceeding with the repair, I explained the cost to the customer: "Red, blue, and brown"—meaning the color bands. He agreed, and then wanted to come back tomorrow to fix other parts. This morning, it was raining heavily, so I started working on the TV. According to the diagram, I installed a 12K resistor in place of R406, but the screen still showed a horizontal line. I tested the +B voltage and found it at 145V. Then I turned it off, removed the STV9381, and only had a STV9388 available. I replaced it directly, powered it up, and the picture came on.
