Video player VLC has supported 360 video will adapt to head display next year

The popular open source video player VLC has added 360-degree video support to its desktop software and plans to add the same support for mobile in the near future. It is reported that VLC will support VR heads such as Oculus and Google Daydream next year.

The Windows and Machitosh versions of the software are now available for free download on the VLC website. The app can play 360-degree video, 360-degree photos and panoramic images, and users can move the angle of view through the mouse or keyboard.

The developer behind VLC, the non-profit organization Videolan, collaborated with VR camera developer GiropTIc to add 360-degree support to VLC players. Richard Ollier, co-founder and executive director of GiropTIc, said: "VLC is one of the most user-friendly video players in the world. 360-degree playback support will enable millions of VLC users to take advantage of forward-looking emerging technologies. And help it spread."

Jean-BapTIste Kempf, one of the chief developers of the VLC player, said in an interview with Variety that his team has begun to study spatial 3D audio technology to ensure future VLC support for VR heads. He also revealed that VLC is likely to be first compatible with Android-based VR devices like Daydream VR, and then roll out to PC VR heads such as htc vive and Oculus Rift.
