How to carry out the verification discharge of the cadmium nickel battery pack?

The verification discharge of a cadmium-nickel battery pack should be conducted following a specific procedure to ensure its performance and reliability:

(1) When there is only one set of cadmium-nickel batteries in a power plant or substation, it cannot be taken out of service. Therefore, full-scale discharge is not possible. Instead, only 50% of the rated capacity should be discharged using a constant current of I5. During this process, the voltage of the battery pack should be recorded every 0.5 hours. If the terminal voltage drops to 1.17V × N, the discharge must be stopped immediately, and the battery should be recharged with appropriate currents. This cycle should be repeated 2–3 times to restore the battery’s rated capacity. If a spare battery pack is available for temporary replacement, the main group can safely undergo full-scale discharge for more accurate testing.

(2) When two sets of cadmium-nickel batteries are available, one set can be fully discharged for verification. The discharge should be performed at a constant current of I5, with a termination voltage of 1V × N. The terminal voltage of the battery pack should be monitored every 0.5 hours, and each individual battery's voltage should be checked every hour. If after three charge-discharge cycles, the battery’s capacity falls below 80% of its rated value, it indicates that the battery has reached the end of its life and should be replaced as scheduled.

(3) It is recommended to conduct a full capacity test on the cadmium-nickel battery pack once a year during long-term floating charge operation. This ensures that the battery remains capable of delivering its designed capacity when needed, especially during emergencies or power failures. Regular verification helps maintain system reliability and prevents unexpected failures due to degraded battery performance.
