Intel announced that it will launch artificial intelligence chips

Intel said this week that it will develop dedicated chips for artificial intelligence technology to play a more important role in the field of artificial intelligence.

On Wednesday, Intel told developers that it plans to introduce a new model of the Xeon Phi processor next year. This product line was previously targeted at scientific applications. The new model will introduce the ability to accelerate artificial intelligence computing tasks.

Intel said the new technology will help deep learning. At present, in the fields of speech recognition, image recognition, and autonomous driving, deep learning technology is getting more and more applications.

Intel Xeon processors have been widely deployed in data centers and are used in almost all deep learning computing tasks. However, some customers have deployed auxiliary processors for artificial intelligence tasks. Most of these auxiliary processors are GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) from NVIDIA.

Intel said that the Xeon Phi product line has more processor cores than the standard Xeon processor. Diane Bryant, executive vice president of Intel's data center group, said on Wednesday that new models launched next year will be able to handle certain instructions that are proprietary to deep learning.

According to Intel, Xeon Phi can run most of the data analysis software without the need for an external processor that could slow down the analysis. This is a key advantage of Xeon Phi over other products. Intel executives also said that Xeon Phi can match more memory than GPU-based solutions.

Wang Jin, senior vice president of Baidu, who participated in Intel's annual developer forum, said: "About artificial intelligence, Intel Xeon Phi is very suitable." Previously, Baidu was an important customer of Nvidia for the deep learning computing task. A Baidu spokesperson declined to say whether Baidu will continue to use NVIDIA's technology in the future.

NVIDIA has been developing deep learning applications for many years. This week, the company said that the latest chip processing speed is still far stronger than Intel's technology. Nvidia said in an official blog on Tuesday: "Intel's development of deep learning is a good thing, but they should state the facts."

In the artificial intelligence business, in addition to Xeon Phi, Intel also acquired the startup Nervana Systems last week. The company specializes in deep learning chips and software.
